A detailed psychological portrait of the hardened communist functionary Arnošt Pánek is one of the most important films by the recently deceased director Ladislav Helge.
This work, associated with the Prague Spring and subsequently placed in the normalization vault, remains an unpleasantly topical critique of bureaucratic blindness.
Arnošt Pánek, a leading official in a South Moravian town, has his quiet days disturbed. His protégé Kvasil, the chairman of a model agricultural cooperative, was arrested - and charged with rape of an underage girl, insurance fraud and abuse of public office. An angry Panek decides to investigate the circumstances that led to the events that he finds so unpleasant.
Although Ladislav Helga's film focuses on a longtime official serving the communist system, it focuses far more precisely on the mentality of a longtime district politician who has built a solid network of power and refuses to change his methods or even resign. Helge raises an important question - he touches on the corrupt conscience, where material well-being becomes the only measure of value. No wonder then that those who refuse to accept this "tacit agreement" are condemned to material misery.
Stud is one of the most important films of the 1960s, accurately diagnosing the social climate of the time.
