The little girl who couldn't hate
Lidia Maksymowicz was three years old when she and her mother were taken to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. And she survived thirteen months in that hell, locked in a children' s barracks as one of Dr. Josef Mengele' s " guinea pigs. "
Lidija' s mother, a Catholic, joined the Belarusian resistance at the beginning of the war: She was a young woman with a small daughter and decided to go into hiding and fight against Nazi atrocities. The Belarusian forests are the last bright spot Lidie remembers before the darkness of Auschwitz set in. She leaves the camp in January 1945 after liberation, hand in hand with a woman who is not her mother: she is a childless Polish woman who decides to adopt one of the orphaned little girls left alone in a camp strewn with corpses. Lidia grows up with her, but she doesn' t forget her real mother. He continues to believe that she is alive and searches for her. And in a story that resembles a miracle, he also finds her.
From the camp, Lidia remembers silence: with gritted teeth, trying to survive, unable to allow themselves the slightest expression of emotion. But now she has found her voice again and has decided to dedicate her life to proclaiming the creed " never again. " Because history can repeat itself.
