The singing of the dead

The search for a psychotic killer leads Kate Shugak to a ninety-year-old crime.

The state of Alaska is preparing for another election, and this time it will be truly an event. For district no. 41 For the first time in history, an indigenous woman is running for office. Anne Gordaoff has a great chance of succeeding, but not everyone wishes her victory, as evidenced by the anonymous threatening letters she receives.

Private investigator Kate Shugak eventually takes on the task of ensuring the candidate' s safety during the election campaign. Even though she doesn' t want to do it, it will provide her with the financial means to take care of her son, Jack Morgan. However, on her very first day of service, a murder occurs, which will not be the last.

If Kate wants to find the killer, she needs to connect the clues correctly. Is it about money, power or political intrigue? Or maybe the real motive lies somewhere else and Kate will have to delve deep into the past to find it, all the way back to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1915?

But few people suspect how a ninety-year-old unsolved case may be connected to the rampage of a contemporary psychotic killer.

Dana Stabenow

Dana Stabenow was born in 1952 in Anchorage, Alaska, and grew up on a fishing boat, where, between bouts of seasickness, she wrote stories about “normal” children growing up on land and forced her mother to read them. She studied journalism at the University of Alaska and then set off on a four-month backpacking trip through Europe. After returning, she worked for Alyeska Pipeline and British Petroleum, and in her thirties she decided that she did not want to spend her life in the service of oil magnates and would rather become a poor writer. She promised herself that she would publish her first book before she found herself completely broke, and she just barely managed to do it. In 1991, her debut novel, The Second Star, was published, and a year later, the first volume of the popular Kate Shugak series, A Cold Day for Murder, which won the Edgar Award in 1993.
