The Suffering of Young Werther

Goethe got the idea for the novel that established his worldwide fame during his apprenticeship as a trainee at the court. Apart from his own love, the suicide of his colleague served as a subject for the author. The Suffering of Young Werther (1774) is a combination of a novel in letters and a novel of a diary, in which the writer manages to brilliantly combine the rich inner world of the protagonist, the depiction of his mental states and the authenticity given to the whole text by the notes and the account of Werther's death.
