A reissue of one of the four solo albums by the Slovak keyboard magician Marián Varga.
In Varga's extensive discography, his solo albums hold a special place—they fully reflect his musical genius, his ability to improvise, and his inexhaustible wellspring of ideas and compositional maturity.
The twenty tracks on the album Solo In Concert feature both pieces from his rock repertoire and Varga's own compositions inspired by such classical music giants as D. Shostakovich, J. S. Bach, A. Vivaldi, and L. van Beethoven, recorded at his Bratislava concert in 2003.
Perhaps the most fitting description comes from music critic Jiří Černý in the CD's sleevenotes: “The hall is simmering with tension, reminiscent of the romantic era of composer-virtuosos like Liszt and Chopin. But Varga ignores the crowd's gazes, focusing solely on the keys of the Petrof concert grand and the electric Yamaha. Defying all expectations, Varga doesn't play a single hit from his time with Collegium or Prúdy. Almost lavishly, he cycles through dozens of new melodic and sound-painting ideas. Others would turn them into musicals; he abandons them, perhaps after just a minute, stands up, gives a quick bow to the barely faded sounds, and before the audience has finished applauding, he's already diving into further improvisations. For Varga, music is not an exhibition, let alone a provocation, but a continuous chain of joyful discoveries. Marián Varga is not just a living legend. He is its constantly evolving continuation. The three of his concerts I saw between June 2002 and July 2003 are among the most powerful experiences of my listening life. And the concert recorded at the Klub Za Zrkadlom in Bratislava only confirms my impressions”.
