At the end of the 16th century, Southern Bohemia finds itself under a dual threat. While the plague stalks the land and cities close their gates to outsiders, unknown assailants attack the carriage of Petr Vok of Rožmberk. The attack misses its target, but leaves behind the dead, the injured… and a mysterious, threatening message.
Petr Vok therefore sends two men on a mission: the experienced knight Jakub Jelínek of Hiršberk and the learned archivist Václav Březan. Their investigation leads them into a land of ponds, old grievances, and unsettled scores. Moreover, the plague is spreading to more and more towns, no one knows where it will strike next, and every journey is therefore fraught with risk.
The trail of the crime leads to the old “war of the pond-builders,” an uprising that was brutally suppressed, but its instigator, Ondra Borák, was never caught. Is Borák truly back to complete his revenge? Or is someone exploiting the fear of the plague and old legends for their own gain?
