Set in England in the late 19th century, the story vividly depicts the Martian invasion of Earth and describes the helplessness of the Earthlings, unable to combat advanced Martian technology. Cruel beings from outer space destroy all living things at regular intervals and despair creeps into the minds of Earthlings over their plight. How will it all work out? And do the Martians have a weakness? Is there anything on Earth they didn't take into account when planning the invasion?!?
Although this science fiction novel was first published in 1898, it continues to fascinate readers around the world today with its realistic description of an alien invasion of England from Mars. It is almost unbelievable how an author at the end of the 19th century could anticipate, engagingly fabricate and describe the technical achievements of another civilization.
Due to its immense popularity, the story has been made into a film several times, most recently in 2005 by Steven Spielberg. Orson Welles' 1938 radio adaptation even caused a scandal and is considered the first and most famous hoax.
