The geologist and essayist Václav Cílek is known for his timeless, diverse perspectives, insight, wit and constructive scepticism on current world problems. His latest book is typically Target-like: Ostensibly, it is a description of the great transformation of our world due to climate change and the migration wave, but in reality the author focuses mainly on how to keep joy in life and how to (re)live happily.
The first part, devoted to Bohemian gardens, deals with topics such as the solace of flowers, the intelligence of trees, and the small blessings of the ordinary world that lead to contentment and happiness. From there it moves into the world of Greek and Indian myths to make us aware of the importance of water and time in our lives. The last part of the book touches on the story of the Great Acceleration, i.e. the human influence on the whole Earth system and its possible consequences.
Despite all the possible catastrophic scenarios, this book is optimistic and offers concrete proposals for dealing with the current and future crisis.
Geologist, climatologist, writer and popularizer of science. He graduated from the Faculty of Science of Charles University, the field of geology of deposits. Although his work is primarily concerned with climate and environmental change, the development of the Czech landscape and the interaction between nature and civilization, we find in his books overlaps towards literature, religious studies, of philosophy, of theology, visual arts or music of any genre.
For Inner and Outer Countries and Macomb. Book of places was awarded the 2004 Tom Stoppard Award. In 2007 he received the Award of the Minister of the Environment "for his significant contribution to the popularisation of Czech science, especially geology and climatology". In 2009, he was awarded the VIZE 97 Prize by the Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation for "his work has significantly broadened the human horizon, pointed out lesser-known phenomena and connections, helped to incorporate the results of science into general culture and deepened alternatives to the human view of the world, the cosmos and the fundamental questions of existence".
Václav Cílek cooperates with Czech Radio and Czech Television, and has published over thirty books as author or co-author.
