Whispers

How to characterize Alena Sabuchová's book without emotions, when there is a bit of magic, a bit of genius loci from a God-forsaken place and a bit of memories of childhood? [...] The author manages her narrative without the pathos that might be associated with some of the themes. He compares it with the present, with the penetration of the modern world into the world of the region, similar to the prose of Olga Tokarczuk.

Growing up in the countryside is different than in the city, but in a place where foxes say goodnight, it's even more different. Describing him in such a way that even a reader born earlier would like to read about him is a masterpiece. Sabuchová succeeded.

Alena Sabuchová's sensitive observations about people, children, alcoholics, houses, cemeteries and gardens are intertwined with the intimate history of teenage girls. Their friendship and adolescent experiences could also take place on a Bratislava housing estate or in Naples. [...] The author hints and conceals a lot, she lets the characters keep their secrets and the reader has the opportunity to co-create the story.
