The book is a translation of the original sociological monograph from 1974, which analysed the state of women's equality in Czechoslovakia in comparison with the situation in the Federal Republic of Germany. It was based on the elaboration and reflection of a series of empirical studies and interviews, which took place between 1959 and 1972. Time lapse, further development of the solution to the problem of the status of women in modern society, as well as reality, that the book is now addressed to the Czech, and not the German reader, However, they required expansion in the form of explanatory and supplementary notes in the text and additions drawing attention to various aspects of further development or facts unknown to the Czech reader.
Several of the author's later studies - such as Emancipation and Ownership and Feminist Forgetting - point to new aspects of the women's question that were not yet apparent in the early 1970s, including a text by the author that summarizes the development of the second women's movement in the Federal Republic from its inception in the late 1960s to German reunification in 1990. The book also includes a text by Jiřina Šiklová, A Few Notes on the Changes in the Status of Women in the Czech Republic after the 1989 Coup, summarising the post-revolutionary development of the status of women in the former Czechoslovakia.
