Zikkurat was a Czech New Wave band from the early 1980s. The band underwent a turbulent evolution, moving from punk through rock and alternative to electronic experiments.
To a certain extent, Zikkurat was a precursor to the psychedelic acid bands that emerged 15 years later. This CD presents a full spectrum of psychedelic music with impressive instrumental performances and sound.
Today's respected musicians Jiří Křivka, Vilém Čok, Ota Baláž and Tomáš Havrda all grew up in the band. They started with the punk of their beloved Sex Pistols but soon moved on to more extensive experimental compositions. Towards the end of their era, Zikkurat also experimented with funk, jazz-rock and electronic music.
Their most important period is considered to be the one in which the band produced up to half-hour-long soundscapes featuring sound collages that were unprecedented at the time (see the CD). The hard-hitting lyrics were concise, and their message was not particularly cheerful – much like the era itself. From the many hours of recorded material, four fundamental pieces were selected. These were sonically refined to the highest possible perfection and provide a more than adequate picture of Zikkurat's power. The cover was designed by the renowned rock artist Karel Haloun, with a sensitive regard for the music and the era of Zikkurat.
