Alpha-ketoglutarate is involved in many physiological functions and processes in our body
- It plays an essential role in the process of converting energy from food into energy in the form of ATP in the mitochondria.
- It is important for nitrogen metabolism and thus for the utilization of dietary protein.
- As a precursor to glutamate and glutamine, it plays a key role in energy metabolism in the digestive tract and in bone metabolism.
- It minimizes the breakdown of the body's own proteins and increases protein synthesis, thus contributing to the formation of bone mass and skeletal muscle.
- Stimulates the conversion of pro-collagen to collagen, which promotes wrinkle reduction and increased skin hydration.

- In a study on nematodes, it was shown that alfacetoglutarate can extend the lifespan of these organisms by up to 50% by inhibiting ATP synthase and mTOR. O-AKG: Alpha-ketoglutarate with the amino acid L-ornithine. A-AKG: Alpha-ketoglutarate with the amino acid arginine. Ca-AKG: Alpha-ketoglutarate with calcium. A particularly suitable form for alpha-ketoglutarate is the combination with calcium, as calcium significantly increases its bioavailability.
