The higher refresh rate of 144Hz monitors secures many benefits when gaming.

  • Smoother and more realistic visual output.
  • Less eye strain.
  • Virtually non-existent motion blur.
  • Higher FPS can make the game more responsive and improve your reaction time.
  • Higher purchase price.
  • Requires a powerful PC if you want to actually see the difference.

A 144Hz gaming monitor with G-Sync or FreeSync eliminates screen tearing and image judder that can occur if your PC can't render those 144 frames per second. We cover these technologies in our article on FreeSync and G-Sync monitors.

How to Choose a 144Hz Monitor?

When choosing a 144Hz gaming monitor, consider the following parameters:

  • The monitor resolution varies by the number of pixels on the screen and therefore the resulting image quality. 
    • A 4K 144Hz monitor delivers one of the highest resolutions available today. For less demanding users, there are also 1440p 144Hz monitors.
  • Diagonal size is measured in inches and should be appropriate for the intended usage. 
    • A 144Hz 27″ monitor is the recommended minimum for gamers of all gaming genres.
  • Monitor response time is the time it takes for the monitor to change from one picture frame to another.
    • A 144Hz monitor at 1ms will guarantee the fastest response time on the market, but many gamers will be just fine with 4ms.
  • The type of panel affects the image quality, which is reflected in the response speed, colour saturation, etc. 
    • 144Hz TN monitors will offer the fastest response at the cost of poorer colour rendering.
    • 144Hz VA monitors have slower response but much better colours and contrast.
    • 144Hz IPS monitors are not very popular with gamers due to their slower response times and lower contrast.

How Do You Connect a 144Hz Monitor?

There are several ways to connect a 144Hz monitor to your computer. When choosing one, pay attention to what outputs your machine supports.

  • HDMI transmits video and audio at the same time; other advantages include 3D video, 8K resolution, or uncompressed video formats.
  • DisplayPort excels in high video quality, backwards compatibility, and broad support from most manufacturers.
  • DVI offers high compatibility and average image quality. Depending on the cable, it can transfer analog signal, digital or both.
  • USB-C is the newest USB standard capable of transferring high-quality video while charging your laptop for example.
