i-DOS with Detergent Scan – precise dosing based on the detergent you use
The i-DOS system with Detergent Scan saves you from having to manually set the amount of detergent. Simply scan the packaging of your detergent or fabric softener in the Home Connect app and the system will get the information it needs for dosing. It also considers the water hardness and helps the washing machine automatically use the right amount of detergent for each specific wash. This achieves more precise dosing without you needing to measure out the detergent for every cycle.
Automatic i-DOS dosing – up to 38% less detergent
The i-DOS system automatically measures the right amount of detergent and fabric softener for each specific wash. Precise dosing can save up to 38% of detergent and also limits unnecessary overuse. You don't have to manually measure the correct dose before each wash; the washing machine automatically takes care of the required amount.
Steam treatment – up to 50% fewer creases
The Steam Treatment function uses gentle steam to help smooth out creases and make caring for your clothes easier. In about 20 minutes, it can reduce creasing by up to 50%. You can use it not only on freshly washed and dried laundry, but also on a shirt or trousers you've already worn that need a quick refresh and smoothing out.
Ariel Express 30 – fast washing for even tough stains
The Ariel Express 30 programme combines the Bosch washing machine's settings with Ariel detergent, so the detergent can start working at the right moment in the wash cycle. The programme is designed to effectively remove even tougher stains in just 30 minutes. You can download it to the BOSCH WGN256A0BY Serie 6 washing machine via the Home Connect app.
Smart Start – plan your wash with energy in mind
The Smart Start function automatically finds the right moment to start your connected appliance. It can take into account times with a higher share of renewable energy or periods when electricity is cheaper according to your tariff. This allows the washing machine to adjust the programme's start time to your chosen energy conditions without you having to manually monitor it.
Home Connect for smart washing machine control
Home Connect extends the capabilities of the BOSCH WGN256A0BY Serie 6 washing machine with smart functions available via your phone or tablet. The mobile app lets you manage the appliance's settings and use other features and services. This makes it easy to integrate your washing machine control into the daily running of your smart home.
Easy Start Guide helps you choose a programme
If you're not sure which programme is best for a particular load, the Easy Start Guide in the Home Connect app can help. Simply enter the colour of the clothes, the type of material and the level of soiling, and the system will recommend a suitable wash programme. This makes selecting settings easier and saves you from having to guess the right options.
Start your wash remotely
Thanks to Home Connect, you can control compatible washing machine functions via your mobile device. For example, you can start a wash remotely and then monitor the programme's progress. This means you can manage your washing machine even when you're not right next to it.
Home Connect keeps you in the loop
The Home Connect app can send notifications directly to your phone or tablet. This gives you an overview of the current status of the wash programme and other important information from the appliance. You don't have to keep going back to the washing machine to check if the wash is finished.
Remote diagnostics for easier servicing
Home Connect can also help if you have a problem with your appliance. After arranging with customer support, you can use remote diagnostics, which allows the service team to check the status of your washing machine and try to determine the cause of the problem. If a technician's visit is then necessary, they can have important information in advance to prepare for the repair.
Voice control option
In supported countries and languages, the washing machine can also be linked to the Amazon Alexa voice service via Home Connect. You can then control selected appliance functions using voice commands. The availability of specific functions depends on the support for Home Connect for Alexa in your region.
Energy efficiency A
The BOSCH WGN256A0BY Serie 6 washing machine belongs to energy class A according to the current European energy label. It combines high energy efficiency with a capacity of up to 10kg and features focused on thorough washing. The energy label also provides information on the appliance's water and energy consumption, noise level, and other parameters.
Active Water Plus adapts water consumption to the load
The Active Water Plus technology uses sensors to detect the load size and fabric type, adjusting the amount of water used accordingly. For smaller loads, it can use up to 50% less water than is needed for a full load. The washing machine only uses the amount of water that corresponds to the current amount of laundry.
Speed Perfect reduces washing time by up to 65%
When you need your laundry done faster, you can use the Speed Perfect function. It can reduce washing time by up to 65% without compromising on the quality of the result. The function can be combined with most washing programmes and used for various load sizes and fabric types. For example, with the Mix programme, you can wash up to 4kg of mixed laundry in approximately 46 minutes.
Reload lets you add forgotten laundry
You don't have to leave a forgotten sock or T-shirt for the next wash. The Reload function lets you pause the wash cycle at the appropriate stage, open the door, and add or remove laundry. After closing the door, you simply continue the interrupted programme.
Large 10kg Vario drum
A 10kg capacity provides plenty of space for larger amounts of regular laundry as well as bigger items like bedding or throws. The spacious drum gives textiles enough room to move freely and gently during the wash. This makes the BOSCH WGN256A0BY Serie 6 suitable for larger households or for washing bigger loads.
Automatic programmes without complicated settings
Automatic programmes can adapt the wash cycle to the current load. The washing machine assesses the fabric type and level of soiling and automatically sets the important parameters of the wash cycle based on them. Just load the laundry, select the corresponding automatic programme, and the appliance takes care of the necessary settings.
Hygiene Plus for a hygienically thorough wash
The Hygiene Plus programme maintains a constant temperature during the wash cycle and adds an extra rinse phase. When washing at 40°C, it can remove up to 99.99% of common bacteria and germs. It is therefore suitable for laundry where you require a higher level of hygiene.
Vario Drum system – effective and gentle washing
The special structure of the Vario Drum ensures even water distribution and gentle movement of textiles. The droplet-shaped surface design, combined with asymmetric paddles, helps to wash laundry effectively while limiting unnecessary mechanical stress. The movement adapts to the selected programme, so the system can handle regular, heavily soiled, or delicate laundry.
Anti-vibration sidewalls for more stable and quieter operation
The special design of the side walls helps to increase the washing machine's stability and reduce vibrations during operation. The improved insulation also contributes to reducing noise, even during spinning. The washing machine thus operates more smoothly, even at higher speeds.
Touch Control operation
The Touch Control panel allows you to conveniently change individual wash cycle settings using touch-sensitive controls. The clear layout makes it easy to select the desired functions without complex adjustments. Together with the large LED display, it creates an intuitive interface for everyday use of the washing machine.
Delayed start to fit your schedule
The delayed start function lets you schedule the wash to finish at a time that suits you best. The time can be set up to 24 hours in advance. This means you can, for example, prepare the washing machine in the evening and have the cycle finish in the morning or at another convenient time.

Is it possible to change the door opening direction on the washing machine?
On the vast majority of front-loading washing machines, the door opening direction cannot be reversed, since the door hinge is permanently built into the front panel and tied to the electromagnetic safety lock. Reversible doors are more common on dryers or certain premium models.
Is it possible to remove the top panel?
On modern washing machines, the top panel cannot be removed for undercounter installation, as it provides protection against moisture and electrical hazards. These machines are designed to stand freely or fit under a sufficiently high countertop (85 cm).
The control of the washing machine is locked and the key symbol (child lock) is illuminated.
The child lock is active. To turn it off, press and hold the "Ready in" and "Spin speed" buttons — or the button marked with a key/3s icon — together for about 3 seconds. The machine will beep and the key symbol will go out.
Is it better to have a washing machine with or without i-DOS?
A washing machine with i-DOS (automatic dosing) is the better choice. It detects the load size, fabric type, and soil level, then doses detergent down to the milliliter. This can save up to 38% of water use and a significant amount of detergent each year, while helping prevent stains and residue buildup in the drum.
Can I use powdered detergent with a washing machine with i-DOS?
Yes, powdered detergent can be used, but it can't be dosed automatically. It needs to go manually into the compartment designated for manual dosing in the drawer, while the automatic i-DOS chambers are meant only for liquid detergent and softener.
i-DOS automatic dosing does not dispense detergent (in general).
Check whether the i-DOS function is switched on for that chamber on the control panel (look for the lit icon). Also check that the detergent isn't too thick — it can be diluted slightly with water — and that the drawer's suction valves aren't clogged; it's best to remove the drawer and rinse it thoroughly with warm water.
The washing machine does not dispense fabric softener.
For manual dosing, check whether the cap or siphon in the softener compartment is blocked — remove the drawer and rinse it with warm water. With i-DOS, make sure the chamber is set in the machine's menu to dispense softener (not a second detergent) and that dosing is switched on.
I am having trouble unscrewing the bottom filter for objects.
The filter is often blocked by limescale, lint, or a foreign object such as a coin. Avoid using excessive force, as this can strip the plastic thread. Try gently working it loose by turning it back and forth, or carefully use pliers with a cloth for grip. If the problem persists, it's best to contact authorized service.
How do I drain the water from the washing machine and open the locked door (if the program did not complete and ended with an error)?
Unplug the machine from the power supply. Open the small service panel at the bottom and drain the water into a container using the small emergency drain hose. Then pull the emergency release cord (usually a black or blue plastic tab) downward to mechanically unlock the door so it can be opened.
What are the dimensions of the washing machine?
Standard front-loading washing machines measure roughly 85 cm in height, 60 cm in width, and 55–60 cm in depth.
The washing machine jumps during the spin cycle.
This is most often caused by not removing the transit bolts on the back of the machine after unboxing. If they were removed, check that the machine is properly leveled on its adjustable feet and stands firmly on a stable floor. An overloaded drum or a single bulky item (like a blanket) causing an uneven load can also be the cause.
The laundry doesn't smell fresh after washing.
This usually happens due to bacteria and mold buildup inside the machine from frequent washing at low temperatures (30–40 °C). Run the Drum Clean program or an intensive 90 °C cycle with a washing machine cleaner and no laundry. After each wash, leave the door and detergent drawer slightly open.
What is the duration of each program?
Duration depends on the selected program and load size. Eco 40-60 usually takes the longest, around 3 to 3.5 hours, to maximize energy and water savings. Quick programs (Super 15'/30') take 15 to 30 minutes, while a standard Cotton 40 °C program runs about 2 to 2.5 hours.
Can I place a dryer on top of the washing machine?
Yes, this is possible and a popular space-saving setup. A dryer can be placed on top of a front-loading washing machine that's at least 55 cm deep. For safe installation, it's essential to use an original stacking kit, which may also include a handy pull-out shelf.
Why does the program time lengthen or shorten?
Washing machines are equipped with smart sensors (such as ActiveWater Plus) that monitor load size, fabric absorbency, and foam levels. If a smaller load is detected, the time is shortened dynamically. If there's excess foam or an unbalanced load, the machine adds extra rinses or tries to redistribute the laundry, which extends the time instead.
Can the water and drain connections of the washing machine be extended?
Yes. The AquaStop inlet hose can't be extended with a regular hose — an original extension kit (code WMZ2381 / WMZ20490), 2.5 meters long, must be used instead. The drain hose can be extended using a standard connector and extension hose, up to a maximum total length of 4 meters.
