In 2021, programmer and former co-owner of a successful company Erik Montelius becomes the first person in the world to be successfully revived from cryopreservation. When he awakens in a hospital room, he believes he has just undergone a planned operation for a tumour. However, through conversations with nurses and doctors, he gradually learns that he has woken up in the future. Officially, he died thirty years ago, and becoming an Austrian citizen again seems impossible.
And while he is still just under forty after being thawed, his wife has aged by three decades. Returning to his former family life is out of the question; generationally, Erik is now the same age as his own children. What's more, he slowly begins to suspect that he might not have had to die at all…
As a man with a missing part of his past, no assets, and no official identity, Erik becomes a stranger in his own life. While trying to understand the changed world and his own fate, a story begins to unfold before him that clarifies not only his unexpected return but also the circumstances of his long-ago death.
Daniel Wisser has written an existential novel full of humour. Its title refers to the ternary numeral system, which uses zeros, ones, and twos. 0 1 2 is a story about second chances, but above all about lost illusions. It is a smart, ironic, and exceptionally witty piece of prose that reminds us that sometimes all it takes is to look at our own world through a stranger's eyes to see how strangely we have settled into it.
