The Pacific (6DVD - VIVA pack) - DVD

8. On December 1, 1941, just 24 hours after Japan's surprise attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor, Congress issued a formal declaration of war against the Japanese Empire. Tensions between Japan and the U.S. had been rising for decades as the Japanese expanded their conquests to include significant portions of China and Southeast Asia. The bombing of Pearl Harbor resulted in the official entry of the United States into WWII. World War II, which is now in its third year by the allies - the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, China, Canada and Australia - they were leading against Japan, Germany and Italy

Executive producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman are behind the series, which follows the real-life journey of three U.S. Marines - Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello), and John Basilone (Jon Seda) - through the unforgiving Pacific Theater stage during World War II.

The series follows these men and their shipmates from their first battle with the Japanese at Guadalcanal, through the rainforests of Cape Gloucester and Fort Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima, through the horrors of Okinawa, to their triumphant but uneasy return home after Japan's surrender.

The miniseries is based in part on the books Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie and With the Old Breed by Eugene B. Sledge, but is also supplemented by material from Red Blood, Chuck Tatum's Black Sand and Eugene B. Sledge, as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers.
