A remarkable journey of two very different people to uncover a secret hidden for half a century. Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) is a former BBC foreign correspondent who has lost his job. By chance, he gets the opportunity to uncover a story that could be the report of his lifetime. His client is the seventy-year-old, quirky, and distinctive Irish lady Philomena Lee (Judi Dench). As a teenager in the 1950s, she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, Anthony. To be able to see him for at least an hour a day, she lived and worked in a convent for “fallen women”. When Anthony was 3 years old, he was forcibly taken from Philomena, put up for adoption by the nuns, and sent to America. Philomena spent 50 years searching for her child in vain. Together, Philomena and Martin embark on an extraordinary trip. Philomena is a sincere, straightforward lady who takes people as they are. Despite all of life's hardships, she remains optimistic and faithful. In contrast, Martin is a worldly, educated man, accustomed to the company of important and wealthy people. The loss of his beloved journalistic work in political circles has made him a cynic. While searching for Philomena's lost son, they learn from each other, confront their different views, and open each other's eyes to a new and different perspective on life.
