Zinc has many effects and functions, without which the body has serious problems. For the development of the child, its deficiency can delay physical and mental maturation, but it must not be absent in adulthood, because it is, e.g. necessary for the proper functioning of enzyme systems. In addition, insufficient amounts cause slow wound healing, memory impairment and sensory disturbances - especially visual and olfactory. Apart from dietary supplements, marine animals seem to be a reliable source of zinc. Zinc is flushed out of the body by large fluid intake, alcohol intake or the use of diuretics. Therefore, it is necessary to think about its replenishment. Other sources of zinc are nuts and green leafy vegetables, provided they are grown in good soil. However, animal sources are several times richer in zinc, so strict vegetarians should keep this factor in mind. Zinc intake should also be considered during periods of increased sickness, as some of the body's defence cells cannot fight disease effectively without zinc.
