In principle, this hardware is just a premium battery backup that powers all appliances needing electricity. The EATON UPS 5P 850i Gen2 backup power uses the Line interactive design approach. Off-line is seen as the simplest form in case of a black-out, since it connects to the battery and disconnects from the mains power. The line interactive UPS also adds data line surge suppression to guard against dangerous surges travelling along data lines.

The most important parameter is the UPS run time. This depends on the power consumption of the connected electronics – for example, at half-load (50%), the run time will last a longer amount of time. The load of the backup source governs the operating time, which at full load (100%) is 4,8 min and at half-load, it's 13,3 min. It is therefore crucial to estimate the power consumption of the connected computers, monitors and other electronics and ideally to add some spare power left. The EATON UPS 5P 850i Gen2 specifies the apparent power as 850, but with realistic use, the actual power usage is 680 W.
