Vitamin B3 (niacin) is a water-soluble vitamin that comes in several forms. In food supplements, you will most commonly encounter three: nicotinic acid, nicotinamide, and inositol hexanicotinate. Each has a slightly different profile and different user characteristics. In higher doses, free nicotinic acid can cause a 'niacin flush' in more sensitive individuals—temporary redness, tingling, or a feeling of heat on the skin. Nicotinamide does not cause a flush. Inositol hexanicotinate is an ester form where an inositol molecule is bonded with six nicotinic acid molecules. This bond is released slowly in the body, which is why a flush does not typically occur when taking it.
