Beatles: White Album (2018 Reissue) (2×LP) – LP
In November 1968, millions of copies of the self-titled ninth double album by one of the most legendary bands in music history, the Beatles, were sent to record shops all over the world. The album, which has continued to inspire generations, later became known as The White Album. This reissue, scheduled for release on 9 November, features 30 tracks newly mixed to high-quality standards by Giles Martin (son of George Martin) and Sam Okell (The White Album), 27 early acoustic demos (Esher Demos), and 50 recordings from the studio sessions (Sessions), most of which are previously unreleased.
The White Album is available in several versions.
• The super deluxe version with the traditional unique numbering includes two discs containing the album, one disc of Esher Demos, three discs of Sessions, and four Blu-ray versions of the album, all accompanied by a book packed with photos, posters, handwritten lyrics, notes, and texts.
• The deluxe variant includes the discs mentioned above.
• The limited-edition 4LP box set contains the classic album and an audio collection including the Esher Demos, a 24-page booklet, posters, and portraits.
• The standard version contains the classic original 2LP.
Most of the songs were written at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's meditation centre near Rishikesh, India, where the band members and their wives travelled in February 1968 to relax and focus on meditation. Unlike their previous album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The White Album was not intended as a concept album. No single theme connects the songs, which span a wide variety of musical styles, including blues, hard rock, folk, and ska. Perhaps due to this eclectic mix, the Beatles originally wanted to call the album A Doll's House.
Renowned pop artist Richard Hamilton designed the album cover, which contrasts sharply with the cover of "Sgt. Pepper", much like the musical content of the two records. The entire cover is white, featuring only the album's name embossed either in relief or in shades of grey.
The album became an instant bestseller in both the UK and the US, reaching the number one spot and holding it for eight to nine weeks. The record went 19× platinum and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000 as a "recording of lasting qualitative or historical significance". Jann Wenner, co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine, commented at the time: "It is the best album they have ever released, and only the Beatles themselves could top it."
