Cure: Pornography (2016 Reissue) - LP
"Pornography" is the fourth studio album by the English new wave band The Cure, released in 1982 by Fiction Records. It contains eight tracks, with "The Hanging Garden" also released as a stand-alone single alongside a live version of the earlier song "Killing an Arab". Phil Tornalley produced the record together with the band members, who wrote all the tracks and recorded them at RAK Studios in London. It is the final album by The Cure to feature Lol Tolhurst as drummer; he later became the keyboardist and was replaced on drums by Andy Anderson.
The record represents the culmination of the so-called dark trilogy, which also includes Seventeen Seconds (1980) and Faith (1981). It reflects the dark wave generation mood of the era, stylistically forming a transition between New Romantic and gothic rock. The compositions are long, maintaining a hypnotically slow tempo, dominated by the cold sound of synthesisers and wailing vocals; the lyrics are depressive, dealing with alienation, fear, violence, and death. New Musical Express critic Dave Hill described his impression of the record as "like Phil Spector in hell".
