Fundamental Physical Relationships and Methods
The textbook Fundamentals of Medical Physics clearly describes the basic physical relationships and methods that a student is most likely to encounter in clinical or experimental medicine. Medical physics is specific in that it deals with the application of physical methods to a living organism. It is therefore an interdisciplinary scientific field that combines physics and biological sciences. We believe that the fifth, updated edition of this book, which has been expanded with new chapters and supplemented with new images, will once again find its readers not only from medical fields but also from other disciplines, such as biomedical engineering.
The methods explained in the textbook are based on various physical principles. Some of them, such as the use of optical magnifying lenses or X-rays, have been known for more than 100 years, while others have only recently found application thanks to technological progress. Among diagnostic tools, we can mention, for example, magnetic resonance imaging or positron emission tomography, and among therapeutic uses, the Leksell Gamma Knife.
After studying this book, the reader should gain a comprehensive overview of the possibilities of using various physical methods in medicine. They should be able to understand the physical relationships presented in the textbook in a broader context and apply the described methods in individual medical fields.
