Glatz

Even the frontier is not immune to murder. Especially on the edge of time, when characters are breaking.

The old town of Kladsko in the basin that once belonged to the Czech territory is nicknamed Little Prague for its beauty. In April 1920, however, the brutally mutilated corpse of a local celebrity is found on the local stone bridge, which resembles a miniature of Charles'. When more are added and the garrison town, then called Glatz by the majority German inhabitants, almost starts to turn into a slaughterhouse from a Nordic detective story, someone is called from Berlin to get to the bottom of the killings. Captain Wilhelm Klein probably has a surname suitable for a godfather at most, but he nevertheless bites into a case with great vigour, behind which there is obviously a frighteningly symbolic pattern. He is being pelted with sticks by both the rebellious Strážnice Jelimani, whom he has gotten his hands on, and the elite from the town hall and the local fortress. It's like no one here even cares about finding the truth. Even Klein himself has his work cut out for him, trying to drown out the traumas of the fighting on the Flanders front. But fate is cruel. Further horrors in the wild beginnings of the Weimar Republic are not long in coming, and among the suspects is a nosy Czech MP staying at the hotel. Because what if high politics is behind everything?

Get to know the gloomy face of a city that offers more than its famous markets! The opening episode of the Kladsko detective series shows that crime thrives best in the lee of the borderlands.

They wrote about the book Audiobook by Glatz

"The author has faithfully portrayed the demons of the recently ended Great War, which still haunt Klein's mind and body, and the image of the county of Kladsko, which has only now regained its former fragile stability. Into this melting pot, dominated by a fortress remembering the Silesian wars, the reader is thrown as into a deep pool."

histmag.org

"This exciting story takes the reader back to a time when the telephone was a thing of fascination and when gentlemen wore bowler hats. But the question is (...) whether this is not just a smokescreen. The reader wrestles with this unsuccessfully, one step behind the prescient Klein..."

Detective Centre

"Rarely do we come across such elaborate prose. It brings to life a brilliantly drawn historical background with the realities, fears and hopes of the time in which the story is set."

Nakanapie.pl

"Leaving aside the historical setting of the novel, however, the detective story is surprisingly modern. The level of planning of the crimes, the manner of the investigation and the motive itself have the feel of contemporary crime. The psychological profiling of the perpetrator and the interpretation of symbols are the domain of more recent [procedural] criminal trials, although of course these are not methods that did not exist at the beginning of the 20th century (...). No detailed attention is paid to the investigation, and so perhaps it seems more brisk than one would have imagined for the time."

Tomasz Duszynski

The Polish journalist, writer and occasional video game librettist comes from the Lower Silesian town of Strzelin. He started his career as a radio reporter in nearby Wrocław and initially tried to establish himself in the field of genre literature, e.g. a collection of fantastic short stories Produkt uboczny (By-product), in the field of folklore or prose for children and youth. He rose to the top of the national reading charts with a series of retro-detective stories from Kladsko, which until the lost war between Maria Theresa and Frederick II. belonged to the Czech crown lands and whose criminality the author glosses in the period just after the First World War, i.e. still under Prussian administration. On the prose Glatz - Mysterious Murders in the Borderland (2019, no. Slovart 2022) with the German name of the city in the title, he promptly followed up with the novels Glatz - Land of the Lord God (2020) and Glatz - Smršt' (2021, no. both Slovart 2023). His gangster film Toksyczni (Annoying; 2019).
