The literary event of the year! The bestselling author of The Help returns after more than 15 years with a bold novel about a group of resilient women and the power of friendship to change everything. At first glance, Meg, Birdie and Charlie do not have much in common. Eleven-year-old Meg lives in an orphanage, waiting in vain for her mother to return. Outspoken Birdie needs her sister's help, and Charlie, a woman with a questionable past, has little luck but courage to spare. When the paths of the two adult women cross, they join forces and hatch a daring, if somewhat controversial, plan to take control of their lives again… But in 1933, with prohibition still in force in Mississippi, the Great Depression crushing society and women's freedom remaining fragile, their decision could have fatal consequences.
