Their next escape from W.C.K.D. headquarters takes them to the Scorch, the most burnt-out part of the planet, a landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Solar flares have scorched the Earth to ashes, turning it into a wasteland. The world's governments have collapsed – and with them, all law and order. Now, roaming the crumbling ruins of cities are the so-called 'Cranks' – people covered in festering wounds, driven beyond the brink of sanity by an infectious virus. Their only goal is to find anything living to feed on. Thomas and his friends must find a safe haven, and fast.
