Lynyrd Skynyrd: Second Helping (2015 edition) - LP

"Second Helping" is the second studio album by American southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, released in 1974.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American southern rock band. A group of teenagers consisting of Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Allen Collins (guitar), Gary Rossington (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass) and Bob Burns (drums) originally formed the student band under the name "My Backyard" in Jacksonville, Florida in the summer of 1964. They drew inspiration from British Invasion beat groups such as Free, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, alongside influences from other genres including southern blues and country & western.

The band also performed under the names "One Percent" and "Noble Five". Over time, they settled on "Leonard Skinnerd", named after Leonard Skinner, a PE teacher and basketball coach at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, who penalised Rossington and Burns because they refused to cut their hair to comply with the school policy of keeping hair off their collars. This name eventually evolved into the final, typically southern version "Lynyrd Skynyrd".

The band rose to prominence mainly in the 1970s, best known for their tracks "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama". "Free Bird" ranks third on Guitar World magazine's list of the greatest guitar solos of all time.

On 20 October 1977, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines died in a plane crash near McComb, Mississippi. Following this tragedy, the band went on a ten-year hiatus. Since reforming in 1987, the line-up has featured numerous musicians. On 13 March 2006, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Their songs have featured in the film Forrest Gump and the TV series My Name Is Earl.
