A new series from the world-renowned crime writer Michael Connelly
Michael Connelly is famous as the creator of the legendary and distinctive detective, Harry Bosch. He then created the lawyer Mickey Haller. And now he brings a new police officer to the scene, Renée Ballard.
In many ways, Renée is similar to Harry: when she feels the law is on her side, she stubbornly goes against the rules, even if it means harming herself. Filing a complaint against her superior certainly didn't help her career – as a punishment, she was reassigned to the night shift, where she only takes on cases but never solves them, because her colleagues take them over in the morning.
One day, however, she comes across two cases she doesn't want to let go of. A prostitute has been found brutally beaten in an underground garage, and a young woman has been murdered in a nightclub. Something doesn't add up for Ballard. All her police instincts come alive. And so she decides to go against the rules.
Despite orders from her superiors and the wishes of her partner, she launches her own investigation and soon discovers that her suspicions were not wrong. She finds herself on a very thin line, but she is determined to see her plan through to the end, regardless of how many obstacles her superiors throw in her way.
