Nirvana: MTV Unplugged In New York - LP

MTV Unplugged in New York is an acoustic concert by the grunge band Nirvana. The album won a Grammy Award in 1996, and a video recording was released in 2007. Interestingly, the band played only about half of their own songs, with the rest being cover versions of lesser-known bands like The Vaselines, Meat Puppets (two members of Meat Puppets joined the concert), David Bowie and Lead Belly.

The biggest hit they played was probably "Come As You Are". Kurt had special requests for the concert, such as black candles. The producer asked him, "You mean like at a funeral?", to which he replied that he did. Kurt also revealed a little about how the song "Dumb" came about – when they were supposed to play "Polly" after "Dumb", he said they would not play them back-to-back because they are exactly the same song.

The concert also featured a short cover of "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, although Kurt only mumbled as he did not know the words. In addition to this track, the band intended to play songs like "Sliver", "Scentless Apprentice", "In Bloom" or "Negative Creep" (which the members admitted they no longer even knew how to play), and towards the end of the concert they also considered "D-7".

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it the 313th greatest album of all time. The same magazine also ranked it 95th on its list of the best albums of the nineties.
