Wanderings with Dad

Wanderings with Dad is a fictional novel with strong autobiographical elements. Its backbone is the journey of an adult son with his ageing father to America—a journey towards a long-held dream, a supposed ideal of freedom, and places known from beloved books that shaped both main characters. However, this is not just a simple trip, but an expedition to previously unreachable distances, the true meaning of which turns out to be the search for a path to each other, as well as a return to family memory and long-silenced questions. Episodes from the journey are assembled like snapshots in an old album. They open up old grievances, inherited traumas, and slowly, subtly, lead towards understanding and reconciliation. The novel follows the joys and burdens of the changing relationship between parents and children at different stages of life, and sensitively touches upon the themes of ageing, the fragility of personal happiness, and the individual's responsibility towards their closest ones. The narrator intertwines a personal and family story with literary contexts, insights into history, and a gentle reflection on the contemporary world. The text thus acquires a multi-layered quality, carried by figurative language, subtle irony, and occasional tasteful sarcasm. Wanderings with Dad is a book about memory, a journey, and late reconciliation—with others and with oneself.
