Water Column
Indicates the resistance of the fabric and seams to water penetration. It specifies the amount of water the material can hold before it starts to leak. The higher the value in mm, the more resistant the tent is. Every tent should have a flysheet with a water column of at least 2,000mm, which is roughly the pressure exerted by a raindrop travelling at 80–90 km/h. To survive a storm unscathed, a water column of at least 3,000mm is a safer bet. For the groundsheet, a water column of 5,000mm is recommended for general hiking.
