Cough in children - practical tips

Coughing is a physiological defence reflex, which has both a cleansing function - it helps to remove secretions from the airways, and a protective function - it protects the airways from potential sources of irritation or obstruction. Acute cough in children is most often a manifestation of a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. It is usually associated with a cold and a slightly elevated temperature. The course of the disease is in most casesuncomplicated, and antibiotic therapy is not necessary. The infection usually resolves within 1 to 2 weeks. The cough is usually dry and irritating at first, especially at night. Subsequently, it can go into the so-called. wet cough with coughing up mucus. To suppress a dry cough, which is often debilitating for the patient and his surroundings, medicines called. Antitussives. In the case of a bothersome night cough that wakes up from sleep, raising the head position by propping it up with another pillow can help. It is also important to ventilate the room where you sleep regularly, or even humidify the air. To relieve bothersome symptoms, the so-called. Priesnitz's neck wrap, but without the plastic. In older children, inhalation can be applied. A teaspoon of honey can also help with a coughing fit. Honey has a proven effect against coughs. However, honey is not recommended for children under one year of age. It is very important to maintain properhydration of the child. Especially in smaller children, who cannot yet sniff and clear their throat, the risk of dehydration can increase with nausea and food refusal. It is advisable to give fluids to a small patient more frequently and in small doses. In terms of food, we serve lighter meals and soups, more often and in smaller portions. It is also importantto pay attention to the patency of the baby's nose. For young children who cannot yet sniff, use a breast pump. The need for antibiotic treatment should be decided by the attending physician, usually they are given in the case ofbacterial infection. When treating a cough in children, it is necessary to monitor the nature of the cough (barking, gagging, dry, moist), overall condition of the child, accompanying symptoms - temperature, rhyme, allergic manifestations, how a cough develops, whether it's getting worse and what time of day it appears. For a wet cough with excessive phlegm, medications that thin the mucus and aid expectoration (mucolytics and expectorants) are recommended. The cough usually resolves, along with other symptoms of the disease, within a week or two. In the event that the disease does not improve orworsen the child's condition, it is always advisable to seek a doctor who will examine the child. If it is a chronic cough, it is always necessary to treat the underlying disease that triggers the cough and follow the regimen set by the doctor.
