LP Record Arctic Monkeys' debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was released in the United Kingdom on 23 January 2006. The album was produced by Jim Abbiss and recorded at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire. It was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart. The British Phonographic Industry certified the album platinum. It spawned four singles: "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", "When the Sun Goes Down", "Fake Tales of San Francisco", and "Teddy Bears". The album's title track was inspired by the book Whatever: The True Story of a Manchester Punk by Tony Fletcher. The song's lyrics discuss the Manchester music scene.

The album's title refers to the sci-fi film The Matrix – specifically the scene where an unsuspecting Neo must choose between a red and a blue pill. The album features artists such as SZA, Julia Michaels, A$AP Rocky and LunchMoney Lewis.
