Vaonis Vespera Pro 2 Smart Astronomical Telescope

The Vaonis Vespera Pro 2 is the most powerful portable smart telescope in the Vespera series. It combines a quadruplet apochromatic refractor, a sensitive astronomical camera, a precise motorised mount and a powerful image processing system into a single compact instrument. After start-up, the telescope automatically orientates itself to the starry sky. The user then selects the desired object in the Singularity app and the Vespera Pro 2 finds, aims, focuses and starts tracking it on its own. The individual exposures are stacked directly during observation, and the resulting image is progressively displayed on a phone or tablet. Therefore, a separate mount, astronomical camera or connected computer is not necessary to obtain high-quality astrophotographs.

New Apochromatic Optical System

The optical part of the Vespera Pro 2 consists of a newly designed quadruplet apochromatic lens arranged in three groups. The system uses special S-FPL52 optical glass and an image field corrector that reduces chromatic aberration, field curvature and other optical aberrations. The lens has a diameter of 50mm, a focal length of 245mm and an aperture of f/4.9. The new design lets more usable light reach the sensor and improves drawing in the red and blue parts of the spectrum. Integrated optical baffles capture unwanted side light before it hits the sensor. This increases contrast and helps to obtain cleaner results in urban and suburban areas.

Sony IMX676 Square Sensor

The Vespera Pro 2 is equipped with a Sony IMX676 colour sensor with a native resolution of 3536×3536 pixels, or 12.5Mpx. The 1:1 square format provides more space for composing globular clusters, planetary nebulae, galaxies and other objects. The 2µm pixels allow for finer detail to be captured than the larger pixels of the Vespera 3. The image resolution is approximately 1.6 arcseconds per pixel. The telescope is therefore suitable for users who prefer maximum detail and plan to further process their images. The native field of view is 1.6°×1.6°. According to the manufacturer, the limiting magnitude is approximately 16 mag. The Vespera Pro 2 does not have a conventional eyepiece. The image is displayed electronically on a connected phone or tablet, from where it can also be saved, edited and shared.

Live Image Stacking

During observation, the telescope takes dozens to hundreds of individual exposures. It automatically checks each image, rejects unsuitable shots and stacks the high-quality exposures into the final image. As the imaging time increases, the noise gradually decreases and the fine structures and colours of the observed object are enhanced. The resulting astrophotograph can be viewed directly in the Singularity app. In addition to the finished JPEG images, advanced users can save individual 16-bit FITS exposures and pre-stacked 16-bit TIFF files for further processing in Siril, PixInsight and other astronomical software.

CovalENS with up to 50Mpx Resolution

The patented CovalENS technology allows you to create automatic mosaics that significantly exceed the native field of view of the sensor. The telescope progressively photographs adjacent parts of the sky and assembles them into one large image. The resulting mosaic can achieve a resolution of up to 50Mpx and a maximum field of view of approximately 4.18°×2.45°. This allows the Vespera Pro 2 to combine fine image details with the ability to capture vast nebulae, galaxy groups or large star fields. The user selects the desired framing in the app and can then watch in real time as the resulting photograph gradually expands.

Automatic Multi-Night Projects

Photographing faint deep-sky objects can take several hours or nights. The Vespera Pro 2 saves the exact position of the object, composition, exposure settings, gain value and the progress of image stacking. For the next observation, simply select continue and the telescope will pick up where the previous imaging session left off. There is no need to manually re-align the image or stack the individual nights separately. The internal memory offers 30 slots for multi-night projects. The large storage capacity allows you to gradually accumulate dozens of hours of image data.

Advanced BalENS Processing

The Vespera Pro 2 uses the advanced BalENS image processing system. This balances the image dynamics in real time, enhancing weaker structures and reducing the overexposure of bright areas. The Uniform Sky Background function balances the brightness and colour of the background. This helps to reduce uneven gradients caused by light pollution, moonlight or atmospheric conditions. The result is a more uniform image from which more fine detail can be extracted during subsequent editing.

Automatic Image Calibration

The automatic calibration system uses dark frame correction to reduce thermal noise, bad pixels and other image sensor characteristics. A universal Master Dark only needs to be created once, and the telescope can then use it at different temperatures and camera settings. Calibration is applied automatically during image stacking. More experienced users also have the option to take their own calibration frames and work with individual FITS files.

Expert Mode and Full Camera Control

Although the telescope can operate fully automatically, the expert mode allows important imaging parameters to be set manually. The user can change the length of individual exposures, the electronic gain, the number of frames and the final composition. The Vespera Pro 2 can thus serve as an easy-to-use automatic telescope as well as an advanced astrophotography station providing image data for your own processing.

Automatic Focusing and Tracking

The motorised focus continuously adjusts the position of the optics and keeps the stars sharp even as the temperature changes during the night. The precise motorised alt-azimuth mount ensures automatic finding and tracking of the selected object. The system also uses dithering, where it slightly shifts the image between exposures. This reduces regular image patterns, bad pixels and other types of noise.

Automatic Dew Protection

An integrated temperature and humidity sensor continuously assesses the risk of condensation on the lens. If there is a risk of dew, the telescope automatically activates the optic heating. The heating only works when needed to avoid unnecessarily reducing battery life. This feature is particularly important during long multi-night photography sessions, when the temperature drops rapidly, or in humid environments.

Control via the Singularity App

The free Singularity by Vaonis app for Android and iOS serves as a complete control centre for the telescope. It contains an extensive object catalogue and recommends suitable targets based on the current location, time of year and astronomical calendar. The app allows you to:

  • Automatically initialise the telescope.
  • Select objects from the astronomical catalogue.
  • Enter your own coordinates.
  • Automatically aim and track targets.
  • Watch the emerging image in real time.
  • Set exposure length and gain.
  • Create CovalENS panoramas.
  • Continue with multi-night projects.
  • Acquire and export calibration frames.
  • Plan an automatic all-night observation.
  • Save, edit and export photos.
  • Install telescope updates.
  • The Plan My Night function allows you to prepare a sequence of several objects. The telescope then works unattended and automatically shuts down after completing the planned programme.

Skycolour Studio and LumENS Guide

Skycolour Studio allows you to edit astronomical photos directly in the app. The user can change the contrast, colour rendition and background brightness, suppress noise or adjust the ratio between stars and nebula. Colour palettes are also available for images taken with narrowband filters. The LumENS smart astronomical guide can answer questions entered by voice or text, explain the objects currently being observed, and recommend other suitable targets.

All-Night Operation and 225GB of Memory

The built-in battery provides power for up to 11 hours of observation. If necessary, the operating time can be extended by powering from a suitable power bank via the USB-C connector. The internal storage of 225GB offers plenty of space for long multi-night projects, 16-bit FITS files and large mosaics. Data can be transferred directly via USB-C at speeds of up to 30MB/s.

Carbon Fibre Tripod and Protective Case

A height-adjustable carbon fibre tripod is included in the package. It offers high rigidity with low weight and allows the telescope to be stably positioned on different types of surfaces. It comes with a separate transport bag. The Vespera Pro 2 is protected by a hard transport case with a moulded interior. This keeps the telescope safer during storage and when transporting it to dark-sky locations.

Photographing the Sun

After installing the original Vaonis solar filter, the Vespera Pro 2 can also be used to observe and photograph the Sun, sunspots and partial eclipses. The solar filter is not a standard part of the telescope. Without a correctly fitted filter, the instrument must never be pointed at the Sun, as this could cause permanent damage to the image sensor.
