The optical refractometer for measuring alcohol by volume is used for measuring fruit brandies such as slivovice, apricot brandy and similar distillates like whisky, bourbon, and gin. A refractometer is an instrument for measuring the refractive index of a light beam, and it can be used to determine the composition of liquid mixtures or the purity of substances. It is not suitable for measuring alcohol in liqueurs, wine, or beer. If the volume of the distillate in litres is known, as well as the alcohol content measured by the refractometer in volume percentage, then the volume of pure alcohol in litres can be calculated by multiplying the two values and dividing the result by 100. The device does not require any batteries and needs no assembly. The body of the device is made of a lightweight and highly durable special aluminium alloy. Part of the device is equipped with a soft, rubber cover for a comfortable grip.

How to Measure
Using the refractometer is very simple. Just place a drop of the measured substance on the sloped optical prism of the device, close the prism cover (the substance will spread out), wait a few seconds for the temperatures of the drop and the refractometer to equalise, look through the eyepiece towards a light source, focus if necessary, and you can immediately read the alcohol by volume percentage on the appropriate scale in the field of view. After measuring, wipe the optical prism and cover thoroughly with a damp and then a dry cloth. For accurate measurements, it is essential to maintain the reference temperature of 20°C.
