The amino acid L-carnitine and its bioactive form acetyl-L-carnitine are formed in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine, vitamins C, B3, B6 and iron. The properties of L-carnitine are related to the transport of lipids and fatty acids into the mitochondria and the production of cellular energy. Acetyl-L-carnitine is the most bioavailable form, typically used to aid in burning excess fat, in endurance sports, it also helps in relation to the cognitive area.
