Lenka Filipová brings stories from the Celtic past to life on the new album Oppidum.
Enchanting melodies, the ubiquitous touch of mysterious Celtic culture and enchanting interpretation are the defining elements of this specific album.
“Oppidum is the name for the Celtic settlements in which the Celts lived and from which they set out for their conquests. Or, on the contrary, it served as their refuge. For me, it' s a house for songs, through which I tell stories from the ancient past, “ reveals Lenka Filipová, who collaborated on the record with her court multi-instrumentalist Sean Barry. Together they developed a repertoire, of which several songs have been adorned by the Filipová concert program for several years. Producer David Solar also plays a key role in the almost cinematic atmosphere of the entire recording, based on Celtic, Breton and Scottish folklore, along with both musicians.
In addition to an authentic experience that transports you back in time to the days of Celtic warriors and mystical druids, the album Oppidum is extraordinary for its musical and linguistic diversity. “I sing in four languages - Old Gaelic, Irish and Scottish, Old Breton and English,“ the musician calculates, and Sean Barry adds:
“I found most of the songs from the album in Scotland, Ireland and Northern England. They are beautiful and strong songs, but unfortunately they have already been lost and it is almost impossible to hear them somewhere. I felt sorry for myself, and I wondered how to breathe life back into them. I arranged them all so that when you close your eyes, the music transports you to the local mountains, forests and seas. It was a beautiful job that I enjoyed a lot, as well as working with Lenka and David in the studio. We often let the music guide us. Every minute of work was a pleasure. ”
The only Czech song sung On the Road (Kathy' s Song) is not traditional, but comes from the pen of Paul Simon. The Czech lyrics were written by David Stypka, an award-winning singer and acting holder of the Anděl Award in the Solo Artist of the Year category. The singer approached him precisely because of his distinctive poetics, which is unparalleled among domestic authors. By combining his unique lyrical manuscript and Filipová' s interpretive feeling, the legendary song took on a form that convinces the listener with its persuasiveness.
