The true story of the twisted crimes that inspired the books and films Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs

The seventh book in the Orange True Crime series reveals the life and crimes of one of the most notorious killers in American history - "The Butcher of Plainfield" Ed Gein. A reclusive and unassuming man with a crooked smile from a remote corner of Wisconsin hid secrets that shocked America. When police officers entered his lonely.., a neglected farm, they were presented with a nightmare sight - human skulls transformed into bowls, lamps covered in human skin, costumes of mutilated bodies and grim silence, louder than the screaming.

From Gein's childhood in a strictly religious household, to the destructive influence of his overbearing mother, to the events that led to his horrific and bizarre actions, Deviant is not only a raw document of shocking murders, but also a deep psychological dive into the darkness of the human soul, where love for his mother turned into obsession and loneliness bred madness. Step by step, we follow Gein's journey from invisible man to a monster whose name has become synonymous with brutality and depravity.

This true story takes you inside the mind of the man who inspired some of the most terrifying characters in books and on the screen - Norman Bates from Psycho, Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs, and Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But the reality is more horrific than any movie. Open the book... and look into the eyes of the demon.

They wrote about the book:

His house held secrets that even the best horror writers couldn't have invented. Ed Gein's story is chillingly real - it shocked America, transformed the perception of crime, and inspired pop culture horror. Harold Schechter takes a factual approach to the case, relying on archival materials, testimony and court records. He's not telling a horror story. He's documenting it.
- Milan Říský, author of Two for Murder

Horrors that you thought only existed in the scariest horror movies - and yet they really happened. Did you believe that the remote farm full of bodies from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the human skin dresses from The Silence of the Lambs, or Norman Bates' disturbed relationship with his mother from the legendary Psycho... were just cinematic fiction? Wrong. This is all reality. Delve into the dark recesses of the mind of Ed Gein - a man whose monstrous acts forever changed the concept of evil and rewrote the rules of horror as we know it today.
- Eduard Birke, true crime podcaster and documentary filmmaker
