A knife: Confessions of Survival and the Power of Words

When the world-famous writer was the victim of a murderous attack in the summer of 2022, he survived the tragic event with serious injuries. However, the knife in the hands of the assassin did not only leave marks on his body, but also affected the author's mind. In an insightful and deeply open confession that is considered one of the greatest literary events of our time, Rushdie tells of a difficult physical and mental recovery that would not have been possible without the love of loved ones, the support of friends and readers - and faith in the power of words. With insight and a sense of humour, he weaves his personal story into the web of world literature, referring to literary classics as well as his own texts. The Knife is a compelling, intimate meditation on life, loss, bravery and the ability to rise again. It's a book that Salman Rushdie had to write.

Salman Rushdie

British writer of Indian origin who was born in 1947 in Mumbai. The family then moved first to Pakistan and later to the UK, where Rushdie studied history at Cambridge University and settled in London. It was the experience of exile, of moving from one cultural context to another, that greatly influenced his work. Salman Rusdie's work is characterised by the interconnection of the oral oriental narrative tradition with the practices of European experimental prose and elements of Latin American magical realism. He debuted in 1975 with the novel Grimus; His second book, Midnight's Children, published six years later, which creates a fictional version of the history of post-colonial India through the fate of two New Orleanians, was already critically and publicly acclaimed. The novel was awarded the prestigious Booker Prize. Thematically and stylistically, the author's other book, the 1983 prose work Shame, is also close to this work and can be read as a political allegory of Pakistan's recent history. Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses (1988), which dealt with the issue of emigration and questions of faith, achieved worldwide fame and led to the author being accused of blasphemy by Islamic fundamentalists and sentenced to death. In 1990, he followed it up with the fairy-tale prose Hárún and the Sea of Stories, and after that with the short story collection East, West (1994). His novel The Moor's Last Sigh (1995) has echoes of magical realism, and he borrowed from popular culture in his extensive prose Earth Beneath Her Feet (1999). Salman Rushdie's most recent novels are Fury (2001) and Shalimar the Clown (2005), but in addition to his own work, he also writes essays, published in 1991 under the title Imaginary Homelands, in which he comments on his own literary work and that of his contemporaries.
