Spotify

Spotify tells the anecdotal story of how a mysterious Swedish startup became the world's biggest player, taking over Wall Street.

The unofficial story of Sweden's most famous startup. The way we listen to music today seems commonplace, but the development of current options has taken almost two decades. And it's not over. Finding investors, fight for rights, negotiating with Mark Zuckerberg, entering the stock markets, in this book you will find it all, what lies on the path from brilliant idea to dominating the music streaming market.

Remember when the music industry was going bust? At the turn of the millennium, CD sales were falling by a billion dollars a year, music was being shared from pirate sites, and even iTunes couldn't save the day. The big music companies were in crisis.

Daniel Ek At the time, a young computer nerd from the Stockholm suburbs teamed up with a wealthy partner to realize a vision that would change the music industry. Spotify tells the story of Daniel Ek, Martin Lorentzon and the startup that became the world's biggest player in music streaming. He describes the difficult path of finding investors, persuading record companies to grant licenses, fight with competitors, Steve Jobs' resistance, many years of loss, but also listeners' enthusiasm for the new features and playlists. Last but not least, the company's entry on the stock exchange.

Spotify has always had a culture of silence - contracts with record labels were not disclosed and employees signed non-disclosure agreements. Despite this, the authors were able to interview dozens of insiders from among former employees and board members, spoke to investors and music industry figures, and drew on financial statements, shareholder lists and internal agreements in addition to newspaper articles, interviews and public appearances.

The result is an inspiring story about how, when someone has a clear vision, extraordinary tenacity and big dreams, they can compete with the biggest tech giants in the world.

In the book you will learn, among other things:
- Who is Spotify founder Daniel Ek anyway: what kind of family he came from, what kind of music he listened to, how he did in school.
- What role did the website for young girls stardoll.com play in his life
- Why Steve Jobs negatively influenced Spotify's entry into the US market.
- Artists have alternately supported and left the ministry.
- How much does it cost a company to have one bill per month.
- What are Spotify's visions for the future.

They wrote about the book Spotify

"Spotify's book is a story of the courage of an outsider who didn't let the Silicon Valley giants intimidate him - and became king. Every shy businessman should read it. It shows that the willingness to fight for your idea can really pay off."

Wall Street Journal

"Why is it that Sweden has produced so much innovation in digital music? Why was Spotify born here, still defying the almighty Apple? Two outstanding Swedish journalists describe the rise of the company that transformed modern music not only as a gripping story from the world of business, but also as a lesson in technological geopolitics. Spotify's refined and determined Daniel Ek shows why Silicon Valley doesn't always win."

David Kirkpatrick, author of Under the Influence of Facebook: A story from the heart of the company that connects the world

"The Spotify book reads like a movie script. It brilliantly captures the story of how technology has transformed music - and the story of the people behind that transformation."

Daniel Goldberg, co-author of Minecraft: The Unlikely Tale of Markus 'Notch' Persson and the Game that Changed Everything

"Finally: a thorough and insightful introduction to the most exciting new player in the music industry and the personalities behind the Swedish giant's global audio crossover."

Shirley Halperin, Variety editor

"An impressive, insightful look at one of Europe's most successful technology companies. Spotify is an insider's report even for readers with an insider's perspective."

Pär-Jörgen Pärson, Northzone's first investor and Spotify partner
